Don't know where Jonathan's comments came from, but I admire his willingness to attract flames from this BBS!

I'm with him all the way. Mahler symphonies aren't made up of licks, it's music!!! I'm constantly amazed and bewildered by musicians who won't listen to music. Part of applied lessons in my studio is to do an assignment called "tune of the week". I've got eight semesters of standard lit, pre-selected and all they have to do is listen to ten pieces (in an 18 week semester) and write me a short little ditty on what they did or did not like about the piece and/or the performance. Yet my students react to this assignment as if I've asked them to lick every flagpole in the Yukon Territory in the middle of January. Last semester, 3 of 21 students did the work!

I don't get it! I learn more by listening then I do by practicing. If you love music, listening should be a pleasure, not a chore!

Sorry, he touched a nerve!
