When I was the only euph in symphonic band a few years ago (there was another player that held a horn but didn't amount to anything, to be blunt), there were times when there was no way around it -- I just had to circular breathe.

One of our saxophonists did some during his senior recital, but not as a trick. I asked him about it afterwards, and he said, "Yeah, I know -- I was letting some air leak out of my nose and had to make up for it." They were l-o-n-g phrases anyway, and his sound was seamless. Good enough, in fact, to get into the band at Offutt AFB.

Yes, circular breathing can be a trick, but only if it's presented as one. If the clarity is there, it can be a useful tool.
