There is a very high "oooooh ahhhhhhhh" factor with gold plating. I have noticed that gold and silver do feel different on the face. I have heard that gold is a less porous material which would make it less abrasive. Some people have alergic reactions to silver, so gold is a good alternative choice.
Will gold make you play better? Maybe, if you get more excited about playing and end up practicing more because of the gold color. In a blind taste test you won't notice the difference though.
I prefer silver because it is cheaper and equal to gold for most purposes.
