having had to muscle off many a jammed cap when I played in school you might also try using a piece of leather such as an old belt (a thin one) wet it a little if it is stiff with warm water then with the horn on yer lap wrap the leather around the cap (like a pulley) and pull towards you with the hand on the side that will loosen it while preventing slip by holding back against your self with the other hand. You might want to have someone hold the horn from the other side if it gives suddenly you could end up with the horn on the floor with a few dents in it. (THen it would'nt be a virgin anymore). good luck.
