BINGO! Past results are an excellent indicator of potential future results. Try to find someone who has a good record of preparing students to attain the type of position you are after. Granted, 80% of success is your own determination, good equipment, and in some part funding. But, that last 20% is formed through experience, teaching, and environment.

I have known players with incredible potential, who hooked up with mediocre teachers and attained high levels of mediocrity. I have also known mediocre players who have studied with great teachers and attained excellent results. Having the right person to point you in good directions for musical discovery can make all the difference, with most other factors being equal.
