I have a new Mirafone S-186. It has a very dark sound with my PT 50 mouthpiece. ( It would probably sound brighter with a 24 AW or something of that sort.) As for the sound "breaking up", my bias is that tone fractures are mostly caused by the player. Unfortunately, there are more than a few macho, gorilla-type guys out there that feel musicianship on a tuba equates with shattering windows in the auditorium.
