I understand where you are coming from Chris. I have often wondered the same myself. How much does soemthing like a "TubaChristmas" really help the image of the tuba? I often go to them for they are fun, and I like to see some old friends etc. But they usually are not all that good and there always are a few players who think they must play louder than everyone else. Or some HS kid who insists on making elephant mating calls on his horn. How can that possibly help our image?
I play in a fine tubaeuph quartet and the sound of four tubas playing in tune and expressing a line together is wonderful, but unfortunately that is not what is heard by the general public most of the time. I too have gotten the same comment as someone else mentioned, such as "I did not know a tuba could sound like that". It is a good feeling when you get that type of a comment, but again that is not the general opinion of the ignorant public.
