In my experience, quintet players other than us tubers, prefer the sound of the 'large' CC tuba to the small F. That is to say larger than a 3/4. I've had to play my PT-6 in quintets before and I didn't feel the sound was right, but when I switched to an old Meinl Weston 4/4 CC, the sound was what the ensemble was looking for. I think every quintet will need a different type of tuba sound to help the group gel. That is to say, for example, the Canadian Brass sounds just fine with a 3/4 CC, the old Empire sounded just fine with a 4/4 CC, and St Louis sounds just fine with a 4/4 F.
