Actually you can often find old but good Eb tubas for that price. A friend of mine who is in the same situation as you just got a beautiful old bell front Conn Eb with 4 valves for around 700 dollars. Quite honestly the horn would not really be up to snuff for a true professional, but for your situation would fit the bill nicely. the only thing would be having to learn a new set of fingerings, but that would not be terribly difficult. Also the smaller horn is just the right size for a small church band or brass group. Even for BBb tubas many times bell front horns, (or recording bass) can be found in the 1000-1500 dollar range. The bell front horns are generally not as sought after as the bell up horns. ken k
