For the last 2.5 years I have been driving a New Beetle and I have been very pleased with its tuba carrying capablilites. With the rear seat down I have managed to tote the following combinations without resorting to roof racks or bungie cords:

1. 1 person, 2 Conn 14k Sousas 1 in a hard case.
2. 2 people, 1 Weril in a hard case, 1 Miraphone 186 in a bag.
3. 2 people, 1 Cerveny 601 in a hard case, 1 Euph in a hard case, 1 bassoon in a hard case (don't ask, its a painful story)

And my personal favorite, with the rear seat up.
4. 3 people (well, 2 and a clarinetist), 1 Miraphone 186 in a bag, 1 bass trombone in a hard case, 2 clarinets in a hard case, 2 softsided suitcases.

On top of that I have found it to be quite fun to drive and it didn't break the budget.
