The new model is a big improvement over the old King. Intonation is quite good; the power of the low register is nothing short of amazing for a horn of this size. To me, the mid and upper ranges of this horn give a lot of resistance, but to be fair I'm used to a very free blowing tuba with a larger bore. When I tried the demo instrument at Dillon's, they could not tell me the price projected for it. I would think that this instrument would be ideal in a school setting. I had heard that the new horn was actually made from some old mandrels that UMI had, but (like so many things), this could be fiction.
