I don't know, maybe I was spoiled in school, but I started out on a 50's vintage bell-front Conn 2X-j monster for about a month. When the band director saw that I was too small to tame that beast, I was allowed to use a YBB-641. Later, when I transferred schools, I played on a Mir. 186 BBb.

Last I knew, those horns (including the Conn in decent shape) were still in faithful public school use 15+ years later. I think they got their money's worth out of 'em.
