The Olds 350, Buick 350, and Chevy 350 were all different blocks. The Chevy was from the small block casting, however the Buick and Olds were from the same castings that went all the way up to 455ci. The Chevy 350 is in conception more efficient because of less moving mass and friction surfaces. Also, around the late 70's early eighties GM came out of the Dark ages and began to use Chevy powerplants in everything that had a V8 except for Caddilac. Next time if your really interested, look at a mid 70's buick with a 350 and then look at anything that has a chevy 350. You'll see that Chevy is much smaller. When they took the Chevy small block to 400ci, there was no water veins running between the middle cylinders, the Big Block Chevy went from 396-454 in production and the buick and olds standard block went from 350-455.
