Here's a link to a soldering page. Basically, you use 60 Sn/40 Pb sold-core solder and acid flux. A propane torch is fine, but get one with the small flame (I think the Bernz-o-matic self-igniter is pretty decent). Work with a small flame and light touch; but make sure the solder gets a chance to flow. Clean up by scraping and buffing. Good clean and bright surfaces are the key to a solid joint.

If you're working with a silverplated instrument you can prevent solder from sticking to places you don't want to solder by using a permanent Magic Marker to cover those areas.
