The vibrating brass vibrates the air - so this "secondary effect" is what the audience hears. What we as the player hear is very different - with vibrations traveling directly through our bone to our ears. There's lots of vibrational "junk" that gets to our ears through our skulls that aren't put into the air by the horn.

At any rate - the real test is not how the horn sounds to you in the practice room, but how it sounds to *someone else*. That's where a tape recorder (a GOOD tape recorder & mike) comes in handy.
