As Klaus mentioned the 981 has the larger (full sized) leadpipe/receiver and the 982 has the smaller leadpipe/receiver. They both play pretty much the same however. The 981 may have a slightly freer blow to it. The 983 is another Besson Eb tuba with the valves around front and a smaller bell. It has a lighter, more soloistic tone to it than the 981/982. This is the horn that Patrick Sheridan helped develop. Perhaps that is the horn your friend was talking about?
