Stravinsky, above all others, would have agreed. The majority of pivotal composers wouldn't have thought twice about imposing emotion in their music. Bach, as this discussion insists on, did not. Beethoven did not, Mozart certainly did not. Brahms broke with the dramatic crowd (the Wagnerians perhaps being the exception here). Even Berlioz, whom the Wagnerians appreciated, although frequently highly programmatic, was absolute in form.
