Melissa,
Go to the pictures section and click on "Bud" Herseth. Read the lesson notes that someone took from him. Basically you'll see that he practices in 45 minute sessions. Most clinical psychiatric studies will show that that is about all that the mind can endure attention span wise. My suggestion is to follow that general rule and take the occasional ten minute break not only for mental reasons but physical as well. If you are in a locked practice room when you can leave the horn safely, then get up and take a nice brisk walk every thirty to forty minutes, get some water and maybe even do some light stretching. Not only does this lessen mental fatigue, but physical as well. And when you get back you'll feel even better about playing and will be able to focus extremely well. Plus, te strecthing help to increase circulation along with the walking helping feed and nourish your joints, which can even help with carpal tunnel and stuff like that. What you're going through is not unique, and you'll find that breaking up your practices and organizing them will make them much more efficient. The ten minutes away from your horn does not have to be time lost.
Good Luck,
Matt G
