This is an interesting question. Because of work, etc. I find it hard to make enough time to practice. If I miss a couple of days there is a significant difference in my playing.
I wonder, however, for a pro, who is playing and practicing 8 hours a day, if taking a couple of days off has the same effect? My guess would be probably not - atleast not to the same degree.
On a theorectical slant, there are absolute limits to everything and given enough proactice time and coaching, it would be possible for a musician to get to a level where further improvement would not be possible.
