Your description is helpful, but lots of folks misunderstand the nature of sound. Sound does not travel in waves that you draw with a, um, wavy line, but rather in pressure fronts. The pulses are high-pressure fronts in the air, with low-pressure spaces between them. The wave describes the pressure, but instead of "up and down", sound moves more like "push and pull," which is exactly what it does to your eardrums. When it pushes and pulls your eardrum 440 times in a second, we call that "A."
