My wife does think that the tuba is loud, but that is only because of its size. A tuba played at the same loudness as a trumpet won't sound as loud because of the lower frequency. When I take out a cornet or trumpet (which I play even worse than I play tuba) she really hears what loud is. Even played relatively softly, trumpet playing is much more penetrating a sound. Tuba, especially when played in the middle to lower range, has a much more mellow and soothing sound. Often you can feel it more than hear it in another room, but it's a good feeling. If she really does complain you can always buy a practice mute, but that should be a last resort. Good luck and welcome back.
