I saw a bari player using just such a contraption last year in a marching band. I'm not sure exactly how they work, but I understand that the little knob on the bottom of a Besson goes into a special harness that places the weight mostly on the hips, which alleviates ANY potential back problems.
One thing I've thought about doing is attaching a peg of the appropriate length to the bottom bow, and letting it just stand on the ground. Well, that and playing mostly trombone these days ....
