There is an interesting chain here. Rotary valves have to be situated farther away from the player than piston valves, thus necessitating a longer lead pipe. A longer lead pipe in its turn must be compensated by a shorter conical part after the more or less cylindrical valve part. The overall proportion of conical versus cylindrical tubing is changed, as well the distribution of the conical parts within the whole length. There might be something or other here that affects the quality of those problematic second partial notes. What a pity experimenting is out of the question!
