I managed to do the music school thing without loans, years ago. Then I went back to school to get my BSEE, and I looked really, really carefully for an inexpensive school with a co-op program. When I got out, I STILL had $14,000 in student loans. My starting salary, immediately after school, was about $30,000 in 1988. It STILL took me TEN YEARS to pay off these loans....although I was able to buy a modest house. I never, ever, have bought a new car. AND...to top that off, I had a full tuition scholarship, while in engineering school, just to play violin in the orchestra. All the money was just for living expenses. Granted, as an adult I was unwilling to live in the dorm environment, but I still lived quite cheaply.
Don't get yourself into any more debt than you absolutely have to. You'll thank yourself later, when you have the freedom to not have to pay it off.
