I think the bar is higher now as to standard of play. But in my high school in central Ohio (ouch, about 30 years ago), we did have to test for placement in either symphonic or concert band, and then you had to start at the bottom and challenge for your chair all the way up (and you could be challenged any time). So I guess that was about the same. Good luck to your son!
