I got to play this euphonium last weekend at NABBA and posted my findings on the tuba-euph email list. As advertised, the horn reponded noticably better than the 642. Yamaha contributes this to the thinner bell. Not surprisingly though, I thought the tone suffered ever so slightly. After all it is well known that thinner bells generally produce thinner, brighter tone, with less richness. However, the tone on the 842 was only slighthly brighter. It had the best response/tone combination of any horn I've ever played. The intonation was nearly flawless, as we've all come to expect out of the Yamaha euphs.

The stiff price tag, plus the fact that my 642 actually has a SLIGHTLY better tone led me to the conclusion that I'm NOT upgrading.

Your mileage WILL vary.
