I first met Fletcher on a visit to London in the summer of 1964. He was at that time a very recent hire with the BBC Symphony. I hung out with him a lot, in fact, he insisted I crash at his place. At that time, the LSO tuba player was Alan Jenkins. Catelinet was already London history by then, and I believe, a professor at Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh. The revered senior tubist in London at that time was Robert "Tug" Wilson, he was tubist with the Philharmonia. Earlier, Tug had been with LPO, and if you can ever get ahold of Adrian Boult's first Vaughan Williams symphony cycle for Decca, Tug is the tubist, ideally miked. He played one of those Barlow Fs, and was a great player. Another very good player in London in those days was Michael Barnes at Covent Garden. Try the Herold-Lanchbery Fille mal Gardee on Decca (London) for a whopping big tuba solo.
