Chris,

First, the guys are right...it's your responsibility to show up with your mouthpiece, and many directors, not just yours, will do something unpleasant to help you remember.

That said, you didn't tell us why you said no. IF it REALLY was because you felt it wasn't sanitary or safe (germs), then you did the right thing. I'm no health care specialist, so I really don't know if you could catch something from someone elses mouthpiece. But, it doesn't matter.

I'm a parent, and I know this: Don't EVER do something you feel is unsafe or bad for you, even if an adult tells you to. Right or wrong, your instincts are all you have, and it's very important to follow them, every time, no exceptions. If you're at football practice, and you know you need a drink, and the coach says you don't...get a drink. Your instincts are there to protect you (that doesn't mean they're always right, though). Talk about it with your parents, your band director, the school nurse, or even your principal(he actually specializes in questions like this). If it turns out it was safe, you'll know what to do if there is a next time.

And like the guys said, get a backup mouthpiece and keep it in your locker.
