For me the key is irrelevant. In all honesty, you could, if you really want, get through everything on a Bb or a C. However, I admit, I play a CC tuba. The main reason I bought it was that it's a great tuba, not just because C is played open. You'll find that for the most part C tubas are better horn. (It's because most professionals play C) Therefor, if you want a professional quality instrument, C is probably the way to go.
As far as size, what's most important is that you find a horn that's reall comfortable for you. If you're a little guy, you probably don't want a 6/4 right now. Just play as many tubas as you can and find what the most comfortable one for you is.
