Suggestions for a good doubling horn?

I'm a bass trombonist looking for a nice Tuba to double on. The dude at the store keeps trying to get me to by a conn 5J but I think it plays like shit. Not knowing much about brand names and their relative qualities, I am seeking any suggestions available.
