I think Lew has expressed very clearly what the theory of heavy bottom caps is, at least as far as I understand it. My approach was pretty unscientific; i.e. I screwed the 4 caps on the horn and immediately experienced a noticeable change for the better ? primarily improved response and more "ring" or presence in the sound. After playing with them on for a few days, I started experimenting by removing some or all the caps in varying combinations... for me, the effect with all 4 caps installed was best, and I liked the result so much that I just kept them on the horn. I would suggest contacting Mark Finley at the URL below for more information. I don't know that they work better for everyone, or for all horns, but I do know that they really work well for me with my 56J....
