In theory, at least, the lacquer is completely clear (invisible). The shine actually comes from the polished brass underneath the lacquer. When lacquer becomes old it usually darkens, to say nothing of getting scratched and non-existent where 'who knows what' has caused it to disappear. The finish can become ugly because it shines in some places and looks like heck in others. The lacquer finish keeps the air away from the shinny brass. When the lacquer is gone the shine goes very quickly with it. If bad and/or missing lacquer is the problem then you could probably polish it to give it all an even start, and just let it turn a natural dark color. That is, after the lacquer is removed, of course. I think they look best lacquered, some think the opposite. I think they sound no different, some think differently. I prefer to see one with no lacquer at all than one half covered. Take your pick; Just don't think you'll be able to keep it polished unless you make a caree out of it.
