My ex-wife used to play with a string group (about 8 people) in New York. They would often get hired to play parties and receptions, and one afternoon, she was asked to show up at the Waldorf. The usual way they played was off of piano scores, and everybody had to just pick a line and go for it. So, they are playing, and as usual it is sounding like they are "winging it", when a man comes up to the leader, shakes her hand, and tells her how nice they sound. My ex thinks he looks familiar, and realizes it's Isaac Stern! She starts looking more closely at the guests, and she spots Claudio Abbado! Turns out, it was a reception for the Berlin Philharmonic, who was in town to open the Carnegie Hall season that year. Needless to say, she wanted to go hide. Moral of the story...you NEVER know who's listening!
