I'm not sure if they still use them, but Hirsbrunners made in the late 70's had tryplen rotors, which have a brass core and outer surface, and an inner layer of some kind of nylon material. Maybe the intention was to make them lighter, but they expanded when they got warm, and locked up.

I can remember playing outdoor gigs with a bag of ice hanging up against the bottom of the valves, or pouring cold water through the horn to keep them turning. Kevin Powers did his rotor turning thing 15 years ago, and I've never had a problem since.
