I just re-read one of Carole Nowicke's transcripts of an interview she had with Oscar La Gassé. Oscar's words about how he came to hold down the tuba position in Detroit were something to the effect of "I really wanted to play bass, but nobody wanted to play tuba, so they gave me the job" (paraphrasing liberally).
How things have changed!
