If you plan on marching with a drum corps, make sure that the staff are professionals that do want to help you maximize your performing qualities. If they are just trying to get you to make a sound on the field... IE be loud... that will not help.

Some corps have respected alumni and educators that work with them to produce a marching unit that sounds sensational on the field. Hopefully you've chosen one of these.

Also remember that if you do march with drum corps, you won't be able to study under your teacher for some time... and that could mean good or bad, depending on the brass caption head and brass technicians of the corps you choose to march with.
