Playing outdoors can be fantastic, but playing and marching will create an entirely different situation. I spent one summer practicing outside and even though I felt like I was playing at medium volume, when I got inside it was a great deal louder than I would have imagined. So I would recommend practicing outdoors, but not the marching part. Spend time on better music. Other tip for improving tone: play familiar songs on the mouthpiece. Put in 30 mins a day (in short segments till you get used to it) and that too will make a huge difference. Key point here: move a LOT of air. Air in motion, not air pressure.
