With considerable respect to Matt, applicants should be able to assume that the BSO actually wants to hire someone in good faith. If they don't, for the reasons that Matt outlines, then they should hire a temp for a year and wait for Levine.

My concern is the statements "Doug Yeo deserves only the best." The question is, how do you determine that? If they have outlined a process that keeps them out of trouble, then they have to live with it and make a selection (or, wait a year by hiring a temp). If they don't feel they have gotten who they deserve, then they need to review their offered salary. That's the way it's done in the Real World.

If they want someone for cheap, then they should pick that person they feel is most able to learn within their organization, and then work with him to produce the world-class musician they think they deserve.

I'm a big believer in recruiting from the top of the barrel, but that takes a financial commitment that a lot of orchestras don't at all understand.
