Here's a source of frustration I've seen in young students. It's hard for them to be bad at the beginning. they want to be able to play songs instantly, but you're talking to them about how to hold the horn right, and boring basic mechanics that you have to get right at the beginning or they'll never be unlearned. (witness my crappy clarinet embouchure that i couldn't change today even at point of sword...)

they don't practice much because they're young and because it's boring. that means they don't get better quickly, and the ability to play songs stays beyond them, and they get frustrated.

hence everyone's suggestion to keep it fun. that probably includes finding a way for them to play a song as early as possible.
