Shell out the dough. Usually a better teacher means a better school where you'll get more professional exposure and more gigging opportunities anyway. I know a few people who were graduate assistants and hated it because there were days where they had to work for ten hours and couldn't practice... that's not to say that happens to everyone, but the freedom of working your own job (where you can quit if you don't like your hours) is much more liberating.
