If you have big bucks I try everything, but in the used market you can't go wrong with a Besson. I recently bought a used Boosey and Hawkes 782 (same as a Besson 982) for a very good price. Plays great, good intonation, great sound, I'm sure a capable player could do anything on it that could be done on a meduim CC. I've ordered a 981 leadpipe for it, as recomended by players on this group. I've played the 983 a lot, and as others have pointed out, it's more of a bass instead of contra bass sound. A great horn for solos, but IMHO not better for ensemble the 19 inch bells on the 3+1 models. Other horns may also be excellent, but the Bessons are a known standard for E flats, and for good reasons, not just traditon!
