Don Stauffer, in his book A Treatise on the Tuba, included a picture of himself playing an old Martin, along with a contemporary picture of one of them when the Navy Band used them. They were huge! He was apparently behind their acquisition by the Navy. They were top-action four-valve tubas that used a couple of tuning bits, as I recall. Unfortunately, he didn't go into their history at all, but he might know some of it, if anyone still has access to him.
