To be somewhat fair to Yamaha, the Conn and King tolerances were/are not as close...and nickel-plated pistons - regardless of brand - don't seem to pick up very much brass oxide from casings.
On the other hand, except for Jupiter, I've never seen more non-damaged valves with problems than Yamaha.
