Yes. Many tuba players may have worked at it to balance with a brass quintet, but it just doesn't sound chamber enough. It's like a string bass replacing cello in a string quartet. The players may like it but it's all about what it sounds like out there in the audience. I personally rather not hear a boomy sound in a intimate chamber group like the brass quintet. It's good that you're thinking about things like this because I can easily say that many tuba players aren't the most musical and are apt to be ignorant as far as the sensitivity in music. It's not all just brass band and Wagner.

I play the Rudy 4345 and even that seems too big for quintet. But I ended up using the Roger Bobo solo mouthpiece and that took care of some problems. But I'm getting a Rudy F to see if that'll be big enough for quintet.
