In John Fletcher's book (about him and with essays by him) Fletcher explains that the double letters started in BBb because the lenth of the tubing is twice that of the Bb euphonium. However, many people in the U.K will call a double tuba (as opposed to a single) one that has a fourth compensating valve and could thus use 2 sets of fingering. Bill
