Your right; he was very unassuming. I remember him telling me that a professional should never get on his high horse and that "if a conductor asks you to sound like an elephant, you sound like an elephant." I've always remembered that advise and it has helped on more than one occasion when gigs have presented less than ideal conditions. It always amazes me that players work like hell to get to the point were they're being called for gigs and then they do nothing but bitch about this and that instead of enjoying the job for what it is. Guse instilled a great attitude in the young players with whom he worked and was a great example of what a professional tuba player should be. He deserved every success that came his way.
