This is incorrect. It's not easy, but it is possible to manipulate the overtones using your oral cavity in the way Ian described. By doing this you are making a particular overtone as sonourous as the note being played, in effect, playing 2 notes simultaneously. NOT simply changing the pitch of the note that is played. For example, one can play a C two lines below the staff, and using the appropriate technique, cause the 3rd space E to ring as well.
Adding vocals to this, you have 3 distinct pitches.
Now as if that's not enough, it's possible to do the same thing with only your vocal chords! I came across a street-singer in Vienna once who could sing in harmony with himself, sounding as many as 4 or 5 overtones at a time. I wouldn't have believed it had I not heard it with my own ears... it really is incredible.
...just because we don't understand it doesn't mean it's not possible.
