Yes, Davies hall is a very large hall, and Mahler 5 calls for a very large orchestra (6 horns and tons of percussion), with the tuba part really being more of a contrabass type part. But all that aside, my original point was that THAT which works well in smaller recording venues (meaining equipment), doesn't always work well, or "translate" when used in larger concert halls. And yes, big Eb's work real well on most Bartok parts. I'm glad you enjoyed your end of their tour. Indeed, I was not discussing their tubaist's skill level or musical abilities. Their percussion and strings were not top-draw. Maybe it was just an off night.
