I bought a mid 80's convertible Bach 42 on eBay for 600 bucks. It has some slight laquer loss on the bell, along with a couple of dings, but it plays great and the slide is fantasic. I then bought a Thayer valve, in perfect shape, for 300 bucks, also over the Internet. Now I have a convertible straight/Thayer equipped Strad 42 for 900 dollars (1000 if you count the work necessary to make the valve convertible as it was taken from a horn with a "fixed" mounting) that plays wonderfully and would have cost considerably more new or used.
I also bought a custom made electric guitar for $450 that would have cost more than $1500 simply to build, let alone the extra that a dealer would charge.
Ebay deals do still exist.
