CHAMPIONSHIP SECTION:
1st Place: Stavanger Brass Band, David King, conductor**
2nd Place: Brass Band of Central Florida, Michael Garasi, conductor

*It was great fun for me to be the tubist in this 10-piece group as we performed the Christopher Mowat arrangement of the Bach Brandenburg Concerto #3.

**Stavanger's performance of the test piece, Peter
Graham's Montage, was excellent, with great variation
of color and dynamics. Some might argue with the
overly fast tempo at which they took the 3rd
movement--their soprano cornet certainly would have
appreciated a slower tempo. But it was overall a fine
performance by a band of young people.

Stavanger's musical performance of their choice piece,
2 movements from Philip Sparke's Hymn of the
Highlands, couldn't have been more electrifying. But
they also augmented it with some choreography and
played the piece from memory. Chicago Brass Band,
which also competed in the Championship Section, will
be performing the whole 35 minute Suite in October;
Stavanger gave us great ideas and a fine example of
how to make this music come across to the audience.

Stavanger will be touring the US for about another
week. I'm looking forward to their performance in the
Chicago area next Sunday, 4/20. If you can catch
their performance, you'll be impressed!

And, if you'll be in New York in the next week, don't miss Grimethorpe Colliery UK Coal Brass Band's performance at Carnegie Hall. Their NABBA Gala Concert Saturday night performance in Little Rock was fantastic!!!

P.S. It was also my great pleasure to accompany on piano Amy Nelson, cornet, who won the Adult High Brass Technical Solo Contest. This is her 4th Solo Contest victory at NABBA.
